Necromunda Orlocks (1995) - Genestealer Cult Brood Brothers

Variety, as they say, is the spice of life and so this week I've moved back up the scales from 6mm Epic models to some lovely retro 28mm toys.

I've recently been watching with interest the new Necromunda releases from GW and this week I have to say that I am impressed by the prototypes of the new Orlock Models that are due for release in the near future.

Three Orlock Heavies will provide some much-needed heavy firepower to my cultist force.

The Orlocks have always been some of my favourite models within the setting, mainly because they look like how I imagine normal militia, terrorists or guerrilla fighters might actually appear in the deep, dark future of the forty-first millennium.

Essentially they are basically some blokes in leather jackets and t-shirts tooled up with bad ass futuristic guns ... except for the loin cloths, Emperor only knows why they are wearing those.

A Heavy Bolter, Flamer and Heavy Stubber cover all three of the Heavy models that were sculpted for the original Orlocks

So this week I have dug through my bitz-box and pulled out five original Orlock models from the mid-90's to paint up. For me one of the key things about the original 1995 Orlock models is that they have forty-first millenium weaponry such as autoguns, lasguns and heavy bolters but they are devoid of standard Imperial or Chaos markings which makes them very useful for more generic or obscure projects.

The plastics from the original Necromunda box are a little monopose, but hopefully my paint jobs make up for this.

Now in this case that means that when my Orlock gangers are not running around the Underhive of Necromunda they are instead used to make up the numbers as brood-brothers, the cannon fodder of my Rogue Trader/Second Edition 40k Genestealer Cult Army.

These models are fantastic for this role and really have the look of some Imperial Gangers or Criminal Scum that have been turned to the insidious cause of the Hive Mind.

I have painted these brood brothers predominantly blue, purple and yellow in order to tie them in with the cultists and the purestrains that make up the rest of the cult.

I spent a long time focusing on the muscle striations on these models' arms.

I love these classic old models and they were a real pleasure to paint up. Despite being 23 years old they are wonderfully expressive miniatures and full of character. Adding these guys to the Genestealer Cult has reinvigorated my interest in this particular army and so next I might try and do some more hybrids.

  1. I like them a lot. I agree, they can act like a number of different bands, they are pretty versatile, wich makes them interesting. I'm trying to resist the incoming Necromunda fever, but it's becoming difficult!

    1. Cheers Suber! You're right, they are just so versatile I can use them for so many different things. The new Necromunda stuff is irresistible so there's no point trying! The Goliaths and Eschers are great...but the Orlocks look just..wow!!

  3. You’ve made these older models look quite contemporary (in a good way). I like way that you’ve painted the skin, it makes them ‘pop’.

    1. Thanks mate. The skin effect does take some time (no washes... all layering and blending) but it is worth the effort in the end!
