After the interesting distraction of a brief foray into the claustrophobic terrors of Space Hulk I have returned to generating the forces required for my up-and-coming Rogue Trader/Second Edition Campaign that I am going to be playing with my better half.
Having recently finished off some old-school Genestealer hybrids I felt that I now needed some more basic fodder for my cultist forces in the form of some brood brothers. I wanted these guys to look like a rag tag militia as opposed to a formal military unit which pretty much ruled out all the Imperial Guard models released over the years. However I also wanted them to be armed with recognisable 40k weapons (autoguns, bolt guns, etc) as opposed to proxies... which effectively ruled out most other companies ranges!
Hmmmm if only Games Workshop had released a range of 'gang style' 28mm models that were packing a veritable assortment of weapons that would fit in a retro Genestealer Cult....
Luckily they did.... The original 1995 Necromunda range fits perfectly with what I envisioned for my force and after briefly considering the Eschers, Delaques and Goliaths I finally settled on the models from House Orlock to represent my brood brothers. I love these guys especially as they look like your typical 80's thugs!
Once I had the models cleaned up and assembled I set about painting them ... this was the first time that I had painted troops with a large amount of flesh on display, and in all honesty it was a bit of a chore! Nonetheless I cracked on with the task ...
I used my palette of colours to tie the models into the rest of the cult and thereby give the army a more general level of coherency on the battlefield. The blue, grey and yellow clothing matches the earlier hybrids' armour whilst the purple weapons casings form a natural link to the purestrains flesh.
I am really happy with how these models have come out and I think they will give my cult some much needed numbers and more importantly a bit of ranged firepower.
The added bonus is that these guys can be used as a Necromunda Gang in their own right, and as my mate is building up a force of Van Saars I think I'll be giving them an outing in the underhive pretty soon! I have already started expanding this initial force with another ten models standing ready on the paint tray including two heavies and a few more juves! Hopefully I'll be able to churn these out relatively rapidly!
Nice work, they will make perfect brood brothers. I like the models but I was never sure why they all needed a modesty cloth over their jeans - part of the '80s vibe I guess! :)

Yeah I was thinking the same thing mate. For my it proved quite handy as it was somewhere to paint a nice bit of blue colouration and tie them into the rest of the cult.
DeleteThey look fabulous, the uniformity shows a coherence which is unfortunately lacking in many stealer cuts out there.
ReplyDeleteThe orlocks were the perfect choice of gang to supplant as brood brothers and as you say, they can be used as a gang in their own right for Necro. Just watch out for those van saars so cheesy with everyone getting rols on the techno chart, so reloads galore. Bastards.
I hear you when it comes to the monotony of skin tones, you could always break it up with some camo painted on the skin.
Anyway I ramble. They look great.
Cheers mate, yeah I really didn't want my cult looking like a mish-mash, or at least not too much!. Yeah I did notice the Van Saars seem to have a pretty good deal on that one! I might get a few hive scum to counter act the problem! Cameo sounds like a good plan.
DeleteYou also have the skill set to do tattoos which would be crazy cool
DeleteHmmm tattoos, now there is something I hadn't considered...hmmmm what an interesting idea, I might give it a whirl!
DeleteSorry just one last thing if u could manage the old school stealer symbol on a couple shoulder muscles that would be wow, just wow that's the only term for it.
DeleteYou could also put it on the back on some of their vests, OMG Cult top rocker, stealer symbol, Necromunda bottom rocker, that would be beyond, so beyond.
Ok I'll stop now.
But it would be awesome.
This tattoo idea has piqued my interest somewhat. I remember when Genestealer cults could be aligned to chaos powers...from the 1991 compendium army list, now that would open up a wealth of opportunities....
DeleteGreat way to represent the brood brothers. Envious of your opportunity to play some Necromunda as well. I've had a gang languish in my bitz box for nearly 20 years!
ReplyDeleteCheers mate! Yeah it's a great game, I'm looking forward to getting a few games in the underhive. You should get them painted up and on the table!
DeleteCool minis and top notch work on them! The tatoos idea would also look great!
ReplyDeleteCheers pal. I have to admit I am really pleased with how they came out, I'm definitely considering tattoos for the next batch, but I'm stumped trying to work out what sort of tats cultists might have. Time for some research!
